The Joy of Interworx 3.0.1-41

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

So some of you might have noticed a few changes in your control panel. Interworx 3.0 has landed!!! (Thanks guys!!! but you told us last year at HostingCon it would be out a few weeks after we left Las Vegas)

If you can believe it or not, all computer guys aren’t dorks:

I am walking into a real Club with real people:

Clint walking into da' club

Here is Interworx guys with the Ubiquity crew (other than Socheat who wouldn’t come out and be “social”) EDIT: I guess Socheat was getting drinks for Chris and Paul. . . maybe he was there :)
After the party gets jumping

Alright last old HostingCon pictures, then I will get back to rambling, here is Corey and the “paid to hang out with dorks chick”:

Corey and the blonde.

At that party the Interworx guys said it would be another month or so and we would get our beloved 3.0, well almost a year later we get it. Let me be the first to say it was well worth the wait. Here is the list of the updates:

New Features & Improvements

  • Secondary Domains in SiteWorx (multi-domain support)
  • Secondary NodeWorx and Reseller users
  • SiteWorx Mail Filters
  • DNS Template System
  • DNS Sync’ing Among InterWorx Boxes
  • Reseller Specific Themes
  • Reseller Packages
  • Reseller Bandwidth History
  • Directory Management (.htaccess front-end)
  • SSH Service Management Page
  • Webmail Selector Page
  • Improved Backup System
  • Improved Import System
  • Enhanced ScriptWorx
    • Add Your Own Scripts
    • Scripts On Demand
  • Enhanced SiteWorx level spam preferences
  • Additional Reseller limits
  • Firewall page now allows port ranges
  • Supporting software updates (Horde, squirrelmail, phpMyAdmin)
  • Numerous interface performance tweaks

We have updated all of our systems and can honestly say we haven’t had ANY issues! In the days when Ubiquity ran that one panel (Plesk) we held our breath during updates. Really I did, it was the scariest thing on earth, knowing that updates have broken everything in the past and then having to wait 24 hours plus to hear back from a “Plesk engineer” tell you reboot your machine. With that being said, the only reason with Nobis Tech hasn’t written a panel is because Interworx did it for us :)

Also with the updates to ScriptWorx (InterWorx version of installatron or fantastico de luxe) it enables live updates to the packages that get deployed. Here is a current list of all the new packages and updated ones: link

I could go on and on about how cool it is, but really you should just signup and see for yourself.

Ubiquity Announces New Services with Ubiquity 2.0

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Bloomington, Illinois (May 1st, 2007): Ubiquity Server Solutions (www.ubiquityservers.com), provider of dedicated hosting, collocation, and VPS solutions, has announced a complete revision of its services. With the launch of a new website this week has come the addition of dedicated hosting and collocation services upon previous options to now include Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago, and New York City.

“We found that the needs of companies who support latency-critical applications had for too long been left unmet.” said Ubiquity’s Network Engineer Chris Donnelly. “Through a consistent product in diverse locations with immediate proximity to carriers and peers, we are able to make these systems administrators’ dream come alive.”

The new locations are indeed consistent and directed towards those with strong latency demands. Every Ubiquity data center has been strategically located at the nearest possible geographical location to their carrier partner (Mzima Networks) and peering providers to eliminate added latency incurred by long-haul transit fiber. When paired with the Force10 smart-routing technology utilized by Mzima, as well as the company’s massive list of peers, Ubiquity has formed a specialized service with a unique attention to detail.

In addition to the unveiling of diverse collocation and dedicated server locations, Ubiquity has brought forward a complete managed hosting model, with an extra emphasis on their large clustered hosting solutions. The company’s proprietary online client interface (UbiquityNOC), has also been completely renovated with a long list of new features including a variety of RRD Graphs and online rDNS configuration, to go live later this month.

Ubiquity enters LA, Seattle, New York

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Bloomington, Illinois (January 18, 2007)– Ubiquity Server Solutions (ubiquityservers.com), provider of dedicated servers, colocation, and VPS hosting solutions, has announced its plans to offer its diverse array of services in Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York this month, expanding upon existing service offerings in Chicago and Dallas.

In order to deliver consistent high-performance services across all locations, Ubiquity has partnered with Mzima Networks (mzima.net), which operates a native 10 Gbps backbone with over 100 Gbps of transit and peering capacity. Mzima connects to multiple Tier-1 network providers and maintains extensive private peering with domestic and international broadband networks. Ubiquity’s recently appointed support engineer Mike Miller commented on the expansion:

“Don’t be fooled, the new locations aren’t really about diversity – they’re about consistency. We want our clients to feel comfortable knowing they can expect the same options, same reliability, and the same friendly support staff everywhere. We want them to expect the same solid, route-optimized network, running from the local technology hub of each major city to guarantee the lowest possible local latency and reliability which squares with our 100% uptime service level agreements.”

In order to pre-empt the expected increase in demand for the company’s newest locations, Ubiquity has stated that they will likely be selective about which customers can receive services in Seattle, Los Angeles and New York until at least the end of January – limiting first availability to early adopters and previous clients before all services are made public.

“We are excited that Ubiquity has selected Mzima to handle their existing and anticipated traffic growth,” stated Michael Dell’Anno, VP of Sales with Mzima Networks. “The resiliency and scalability of the Force10-powered Mzima backbone enhances their value proposition with their prospective and existing clients by incorporating the highest quality IP connectivity available in the marketplace today.”

Nobis Group Opens New Central Offices

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Bloomington, Illinois (December 30, 2006) – The Nobis Technology Group, LLC (www.nobistech.net), holding company of recently merged DarkStar Communications and Ubiquity Hosting Solutions, has announced that it has opened offices in Ubiquity’s hometown at 510 E. Washington, Third Floor, Suite 322, in Bloomington, Illinois.

These new offices will operate as a central headquarters for handling the administrative tasks associated with either brand, as well as the staging ground for each localized Ubiquity facility being rolled out in 2007.

The Nobis Technology Group has acted to give back to the community by leasing space inside a very historic building in the local community of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, which is now maintained by Bloomington’s Mount Mariah Christian Church, and shared by various community programs and area businesses.

Ubiquity Announces Merger

Friday, December 1st, 2006

Bloomington, Illinois (December 1, 2006) – Ubiquity Hosting Solutions (www.ubiquityhosting.com), provider of collocation, dedicated, shared, and virtual server hosting, and DarkStar Communications (www.darkstarllc.com), provider of Ventrilo, Teamspeak, game server, IRCd, and shell hosting, have announced a merger which will maintain both companies as brands under a new parent company known as the Nobis Technology Group (www.nobistech.net) – a new Illinois Limited Liability Corporation.

While DarkStar Communications currently operates servers in 20 cities in 11 different countries, making them one of the most diverse hosts online of any niche, as well as one of the largest voice communications services online in both Ventrilo and Teamspeak markets. Ubiquity has made it’s focus on just one location to date, building up it’s presence offering diverse b2b IT services from 350 E. Cermak in Chicago, before moving towards it’s first expansion by opening collocation at 1950 N. Stemmons Highway in Dallas last summer. DarkStar Communications’ General Manager Jake Mertel commented on the merger:

“This (merger) means a lot of things for a lot of people. Both companies obviously benefit massively in the boost of both economies of scope as well as economies of scale, but that’s only the start. The pieces fit perfectly to allow either half of the puzzle to a caliber of international services never before seen in the hosting industry. ”

Nobis has made it clear that they will be doing little to tamper with their current services (unlike many recent mergers in the hosting industry), due to the scarcely overlapping scope of either company’s current services. The company will instead be building upon its current offerings, utilizing the resources that either organization is able to bring to the table. Ubiquity’s Chief Technical Officer Clint Chapman elaborated regarding plans for the future:

“Ubiquity prides its collocation and dedicated hosting on our flexibility and abilities to meet virtually any set of needs. There is no question that DarkStar’s particular set of needs for the lowest-latency, highest availability networks stretch our requirements to build consistently high performance networks the extreme.

It’s one thing to sell someone a dedicated server and tell them they won’t have any problems with latency-critical applications. It’s another thing when you can honestly tell your clients that you’ve carefully sculpted a network in every city and test it daily with your own world-class hosting operations of every shape, to be certain that doesn’t ever change”.

Ubiquity Enters the Virtual Private Server Industry

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Bloomington, Illinois (October 20, 2006) - Ubiquity Server Solutions (www.ubiquityservers.com), provider of dedicated and collocation hosting, has announced that it will be entering into the virtual dedicated server industry this month.

When asked for a statement, Ubiquity’s Chief Marketing Officer Corey Northcutt commented:

“This has really been a long time coming. For years now our company has made a significant name in shared and dedicated hosting, it was simply time to fill in the gap between those offerings. We’re jumping in full-steam too - for all of the VPS clients that come to us over the first seven days, we’ll be giving out an entire free month of service.”

Ubiquity’s new virtual private server (VPS) service will utilize Virtuozzo - SW-Soft’s industry-leading platform for partitioning isolated virtual server environments from a single real server. This solution is one of very few which secures complete functional, fault, and performance isolation.

Although the initial features with this offering are somewhat limited, providing options for two operating systems and three control panels, the company has promised a substantial increase to the available options across the next 30 days.

Ubiquity Server Solutions releases UbiquityNOC

Monday, July 17th, 2006

Bloomington, Illinois (July 13, 2006) - After much anticipation, the 100% in-house developed UbiquityNOC server management application has been released by Ubiquity Server Solutions - the dedicated and collocation hosting unit of Ubiquity Hosting Solutions, LLP. With this new interface, Ubiquity clients can now utilize the common features of other high-end dedicated providers including management all of server information with a common interface, and commanding remote power controls for instant reboots in the event of a freeze-up.

In addition, the new UbiquityNOC has been made equip with advanced service monitoring capabilities. Through this fully-configurable interface, the NOC supplies automated service monitoring capabilities on par with many costly exclusive server management companies. In the event of a service failure, the UbiquityNOC can be configured to send notification immediately via email or text message. If the user chooses, the NOC can also step beyond popular monitoring services by executing pre-defined shell commands or a full system restart should a certain service fail.

When asked to comment, Chief Operating Officer for Ubiquity Corey Northcutt stated:

“After reviewing the mainstream software titles for data center management, we eventually decided that nothing on the market quite had the features that our members had been asking for. Clearly the only solution left was for us to build this new interface, and from how it’s shaped up, we’re very happy we did.”

Although it has not yet been stated where this project will inevitably lead, Ubiquity has made it clear that a number of new features and advancements are still on the way.

Shell Web Hosting with .NET Framework at Ubiquity

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

Bloomington, Illinois (June 19, 2006) - Ubiquity Hosting Solutions, an eminent Linux hosting provider, has announced two new and highly unique Linux tools to be added to their web hosting services effective immediately.

The first of these tools provides web developers a rare service within the Linux web hosting industry which has been labeled jailed shell access. With this tool, webmasters are given the authority to connect to the web hosting provider using Secured Shell Handling (SSH), allowing the capability to compress and decompress files on the web server, execute Linux bash scripts, monitor system health, and a large variety of other features. Security in this environment has been maintained for the reason that Linux shell commands available to the webmaster have been “jailed”, which in turn will limit the availability of potentially dangerous commands to the users.

In addition to SSH, Ubiquity has stabilized the Mono Project’s open source tool which emulates .NET Framework in a Linux web hosting environment. Through Mono, Ubiquity has successfully assembled a stable and effective platform for running ASPx scripting from a Linux system – and in turn bridging the gap between Linux and Windows web hosting which otherwise exists. When asked to comment, Chief Technical Officer for Ubiquity Clint Chapman stated “Linux is capable of so much more than what most web hosting companies are doing. We decided that the time had come to start delivering the full potential of what we offer”.

Ubiquity Hosting Adopts New Affiliate Program

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Bloomington, Illinois (April 10, 2006) – Ubiquity Hosting Solutions, LLP (www.ubiquityhosting.com), a premium provider of Linux web hosting, dedicated servers, and collocation, has announced a complete overhaul of its pre-existing affiliate referral program.

The new hosting affiliate program marks a number of significant and unusual revisions which are expected to benefit existing members. Members utilizing Ubiquity’s hosting services no longer just receive discounts on more Ubiquity hosting services, but rather cash reimbursement for each referral via PayPal.com’s payment gateway.

This new system also provides members multiple tiers of referral payouts, dependent on what type of hosting package a newly referred client subscribes. Explaining this decision, Chief Operating Officer for Ubiquity Corey Northcutt explained: “Our original affiliate program was forged by the principles of the other hosting companies. We’ve rethought out all options for the new format so that our hosting clients can get what they want out of a referral program. If tomorrow one of our clients refers Microsoft to us, they’re going to reap a reward beyond belief – and that’s just as they deserve.”

Web hosting clients utilizing Ubiquity’s new referral program may also be pleased to learn that the method of tracking referrals exclusively through browser cookies has ended. As pointed out on the company’s web site, most hosting signups do not come immediately following the discovery of the company web site, giving time for cookies to expire, if they have not been blocked by browser security settings already. By demanding each new signup manually provide detailed information about how they arrived, the company states that they are able to greatly increase the percentage of which referrals are recognized.
